10 ways to make mum feel special for Mother’s Day in isolation

Mother’s Day only comes around once a year and, while we’re sure you know how to spoil Mum, we’re not sure if you’d ever expect to be doing so during a global pandemic.

COVID-19 may mean many of Mum’s favourite shops have closed. Maybe you’d planned to treat her to a weekend away or a special spa treatment?

No need to panic (there has been enough of that)! Being an essential service, Dandenong Market remains open every Market day for you to stock up to make spoiling Mum easy.

Although Mother’s Day is going to be different this year, it doesn’t mean you can’t treat Mum to a wonderful day full of surprises.

To give you a hand, we’ve put together a list of 10 ways to make Mum feel super special no matter your isolation situation. Better yet, they are all best enjoyed at home – safe and comfy! Mums are a perfect 10, after all.

Treating mum when you’re isolating with her:

1. MasterChef: Mother’s Day cook-off

Isolation means many of us are working or studying from home, there is less traffic on the roads, no toilet paper in the house and more time to prepare homemade meals.

We guarantee that Mum will appreciate being kicked out of the kitchen for dinner on Mother’s Day to be treated to a meal that she doesn’t have to cook (or clean up).

Dandenong Market is your one-stop-shop for all of your Mother’s Day meal essentials. Whether it’s home-made fish and chips, a Sunday roast or a classic curry, Dandenong Market has all the ingredients. We even have the recipes! All you have to do is whip together Mum’s favourite meal and make sure you clean the dishes afterwards – and you’ll have Mum smiling from ear to ear.

Wanting to earn more guaranteed brownie points? Yes, you’ll even find a foolproof brownie recipe here too!

2. Luxury at-home cinema experience

Every mum loves Gold Class. The joy of being uninterrupted for longer than 90 minutes and having a three-course meal with a glass of bubbles delivered to you? Priceless.

And while you can’t take Mum out to the movies, but you can definitely bring the service to her.

Set up Mum’s favourite flick on Netflix, pick up some antipasti from any of our delicious delis for an entrée, a pizza from G’s Pizzeria for a main and some mouth-watering churros from 18 Grams for dessert and boom! The perfect night.

Press play and be ready to service Mum at her beck and call. What? We’re trying to make it realistic. Right?

3. One-way ticket around the world (for your taste buds)

COVID-19 and self-isolation means that travelling anywhere is off the cards this Mother’s Day but that doesn’t mean you can’t take Mum’s tastebuds on a one-way trip around the world from the comfort of your own home.

Pop by Dandenong Market on Sunday morning from 9am and put together a smorgasbord of different cultural dishes for her to try.

Here are our recommendations:

Lead her tastebuds on a journey with more than 150 different nationalities we welcome at Dandenong Market!

Treating mum when you can’t be together:

4. Gift in a jar

When you think of Mother’s Day you often think of breakfast in bed. While it might not be possible to cook a feast for Mum if you’re not isolating with her, you can put together a mason jar full of deliciousness that she can add to some Greek yoghurt and seasonal fruit.

Handmade granola in a jar is not only a yummy and healthy breakfast but an aesthetically pleasing gift that will look great on the ‘gram. Tie a heartfelt note to the top of the jar and the happy tears are bound to be flowing.

Click here to find our favourite handmade granola recipe from Megan which can be made using ingredients from any of our delicious nut shops.

5. Grazing box to treat a foodie mum

Whose mum doesn’t love a flavourful platter full of her favourite cheeses, fruits and sweets?

Stop by Dandenong Market on Friday, Saturday or even Sunday morning to stock up on all of the tasty ingredients you know Mum will love alongside a glass of her favourite wine.

Take your pick between Nesh’s Corner Deli, Ross Pecora Cheeses or Batory Continental Deli for delicious cheeses and antipasti, find the most colourful fruits from any of our friendly fruiterers, pick up Mum’s favourite chocolate from M&Co Sweet Treats and top it off with some of Perfect Coffee’s pastries. Is anyone else drooling?

Pack it into a basket, snap a pic and deliver to her door. It’s too easy!

6. High tea fit for a queen

Much like a grazing box, foodie mums will love and appreciate the thought behind a DIY high tea landing at her front door.

How do you build the perfect home delivered high tea?

We’d suggest picking up the following:

Make some mini sandwiches using the cured meats, egg, salads and bread, pop onto a plate, serving board or gift box and decorate using the cakes, cheeses and olives. You can also make your own strawberry or raspberry jam to add to some delectable scones.

Pair with chai leaves or coffee beans depending on Mum’s taste and she will feel like she’s dining with the Queen herself.

Treating mum when the kids are too young to do it alone:

7. Breakfast in bed

Breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day is a MUST even when you’re living through a global pandemic!

Gather the kids and line them up with an age-appropriate job.  Perhaps it’s toasting some slices from a delicious fruit loaf from Melina’s Bakery and Larder for French Toast or frying up some of the freshest eggs from Triple Q Farm. If they’re too young to put on an apron, set them up with some crafts to make a home-made place mat and card filled with love.

Pair this mouth-watering breakfast with a freshly made juice from Soup Junction! Not sure where to start? Here are some of our favourite combinations from the girls in the Market office:

  • Moni’s beetroot, ginger, green apple, pineapple, lemon, celery and kale
  • Judy’s green apple, celery and ginger
  • Maddie’s apple, beetroot and carrot
  • Alisha’s cucumber, celery and apple
  • Jen’s pineapple, orange and mango
  • Nathalie’s pineapple, watermelon and ginger

Deliver with hugs and kisses and we’re sure Mum will be feeling the love.

8. Baker Boys have your lunch sorted!

Not a MasterChef but want lunch sorted so your lady love doesn’t have to?

No worries! The guys at Baker Boys have your back. Why not pick up some tasty meat pies or vegetable pasties from the Market on Sunday morning and reheat them so that Mum doesn’t have to do any cooking? It’s a win-win!

We’re open from Friday and Saturday 7am-4pm or Sunday 9am-4pm so there’s plenty of time to swing by. We’d suggest picking up a few slices of carrot cake while you’re at it – another office favourite.

9. Making memories

Tiny chefs – listen up!

Mums are sweet but not as sweet as this easy-to-make snack. Honey Joys are a crowd favourite and can be made using the sweetest honey from Jo at Hart’s Honey.

In fact, everyone in the family can choose from any of his delicious varieties to see who will win Mum’s heart.

Set your kids up with their aprons and the recipe from our website and invite Mum into the kitchen to watch and enjoy a bake-off like no other. She’ll love being able to spend time with the ones she loves and being rewarded with a tasty snack in the process.

She can choose a winner – even though we all know mums don’t have a favourite, right?

Take lots of photos and we promise you won’t remember that you were stuck inside this Mother’s Day – just love and laughter (and, okay, a bit of a sticky mess!)

10. Last minute pick-me-up

Waited until the last minute to show Mum you love her?

Pop by the Market on Sunday morning and pick up a coffee from any of our delicious cafes and a pack of half a dozen Dandee Donuts (plus half a dozen for yourself – obviously!). We’re open Mother’s Day from 9am!

It’s not just mums who deserve thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts (no, we’re not talking about jealous Dad!) – it’s a day to celebrate grandmas, too. Whether she’s yours or an elderly neighbour or favourite auntie, remembering them in these anxious times means so much more.

Whether you’re shopping for a new mum who’s celebrating her first Mother’s Day in isolation or saying thanks to your nana or nonna (or someone else’s) because being kind is what makes our world a better place, any of our ideas above will be just the thing to make her day.

From everyone at Dandenong Market, we want to say a Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums, nanas, aunties and friends, to all the new mums and mums-to-be – your lives are about to change forever. As always, our deepest thoughts go to those who have lost mums or babes, for which this day is the hardest.
