One of Dandenong’s Most Cherished Landmarks Turns 75
The beloved Dandy Pig neon sign, a nostalgic symbol of Dandenong’s rich industrial heritage, celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2025 with a spectacular new commemorative mural at Dandenong Market. This cherished landmark represents one of the region’s most enduring cultural icons, and now its legacy continues through art.
The Legacy of Dandenong’s Historic Neon Sign
First erected in the 1950s above the Dandy Bacon shop on Lonsdale Street, the iconic display was one of the region’s earliest animated neon signs. Dressed in formal morning attire and tipping his top hat, the cheerful character welcomed locals and visitors alike to the gateway suburb of Dandenong. Over time, this illuminated landmark became a cultural symbol, marking the city’s role as a centre for industry and manufacturing.
After being removed and stored following the closure of the factory in 1983, the sign found a new home at the Market in 1993. It underwent further conservation before being officially reinstated in 2013 by local council. Now, in 2025, this historic piece’s story is being brought to life once again through a new mural at Dandenong Market.
New Commemorative Mural
In honour of this milestone and together with project partner Juddy Roller, the Market has commissioned a bold and memorable artwork by acclaimed artist Claudio Mantuano. The talented muralist brings decades of experience to this special project, paying tribute to the legacy of the vintage signage.
The vibrant streetscape reflects the deep nostalgia this beloved symbol evokes for so many in the community, while honouring it as a treasured local landmark.
