Celebrating 75 years of the iconic 'Dandy Pig'
One of Dandenong’s most cherished landmarks is turning 75
The beloved Dandy Pig sign is turning 75 in 2025, marking a milestone for this iconic landmark. First erected in 1950 above the Dandy Bacon shop on Lonsdale Street, the animated neon character — dressed smartly in morning attire and tipping his hat — quickly became a welcoming sight for locals and visitors.
Over time, the Pig came to symbolise Dandenong’s industrial and manufacturing history. Even after the closure of the factory in 1983, the community’s affection for the character ensured its survival. Relocated to Dandenong Market in 1993 and later conserved and reinstated by council in 2013, the Dandy Pig continues to shine atop Dandenong Market.
Seventy-five years on, the Dandy Pig remains more than just a sign — it’s a treasured cultural icon that embodies the spirit and story of Dandenong.
