The Secret World of Food comes alive at Dandenong Market

We know fresh food is delicious, but do we know where it comes from? The Secret World of Food helps kids connect the dots – in a fun, hands-on way.

This November, VicHealth is bringing its much-loved Secret World of Food activation to Dandenong Market and it’s set to be a fun and educational experience for families.

Running Market days from Tuesday 11 November to Sunday 16 November, this free interactive activation invites kids to become food explorers. Journeying through the entire food cycle – from farm to market, kitchen to compost. Located in The Bazaar next to the playground, the experience is designed to spark curiosity and build a deeper understanding of where our food comes from.

What makes the Dandenong Market edition unique is the opportunity for families to extend the experience beyond the activation. After exploring the food cycle, kids and their families can shop for fresh produce, chat with local traders, and even take home seedlings to start their own food journey at home.

Kids will receive a food passport to collect stamps as they move through the five stations:

• Goodness Garden: Pick fresh ‘produce’ from the garden bed.
• Delivery Co: Deliver food to the market.
• The Market: Buy and sell fruits and vegetables.
• Kitchen Capers: Prepare a delicious ‘meal’ in the kitchen.
• Compost: Pop leftovers in the compost and feed the worms.

This activation is part of VicHealth’s commitment to improving access to healthy, fresh and culturally appropriate food for all Victorians. It also responds to findings from VicHealth’s Kitchen Connections survey, which revealed that 9 in 10 Victorian kids aged 4–12 want to be more involved in food-related activities at home.
