Alem began her business after working in a cafe while completing a hospitality course at the Chisolm Institue.
Wanting to provide the ‘real’ taste of coffee to the community, Alem opened a stall at the SMRC Dandy Marker’s Market in 2018.
The single mum took up a full-time stall at Dandenong Market following her popularity at the Maker’s Market.
Abyssinia Coffeeland has a range of the finest Ethiopian organic coffee beans. These range from ground coffee to the exotic Yirgacheffe and Sidano.
Alem travels to Ethiopia yearly to collect her organic coffee beans, which she then packs and roasts in Australia. Her fantastic blends are much-loved by many loyal customers.
Dandenong Star Journal’s resident journalist Cam Loucadou-Wells reviewed Alem’s range of coffee beans in 2019, noting that ‘the single-blend Sidano bean tastes surprisingly smooth with a nutty, sweet undertone. There’s none of that familiar bitter after-taste or head-spinning kick. And it’s very more-ish.’
Alem is a coffee lover herself, revealing that she drinks at least three cups a day.
The coffee enthusiast has dreams of one day opening up her own cafe with her coffee roasting out the back. For now, though, she loves to bring her country’s taste to the Market community.
You can find Alem and Abyssinia Coffeeland in The Bazaar at stall number E18. We promise she is very easy to find – just look for the bright smile.
