Sustainability
The Market has several sustainability initiatives to help combat food waste, reduce single use plastic & support energy supplies.
Borrow a Bag
Forgot your shopping bag? Our Borrow-a-Bag stattion is located in Market Square next to the free cardboard box crate, allowing customers to take a bag for shopping, should you forget to bring your own.
Reusable cardboard boxes
Free boxes are available in Market Square next to Golden Popcorn. If you don’t have a bag or trolley, these boxes can be used to carry your fruit and vegetables. Please return them or use them again to save waste.
Refill water bottle stations
There are 2 water stations located in Market Square. By bringing your own water bottle and re-filling at the market you can help save single use plastic bottles going to landfill.
Recycle coffee cups
We’ve partnered with Simply Cups to help reduce the millions of single use coffee cups that go to landfill every week. There are two stations located in Market Square – outside Froth & Perfect Coffee.
You can also help reduce waste by using your own coffee cup. Reusable Market coffee cups are available to purchase from the Market office.
Solar panels
There are solar panels along the roof of the Bazaar helping to support energy supplies. As a renewable source of power, solar energy has an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change, which is critical to protecting humans, wildlife, and ecosystems.
Food waste
Frankie’s Kitchen are a Not for Profit community kitchen based in Warragul who use produce from the Market that would otherwise go to waste to create nutritional, delicious meals for people in need.
Every year it is estimated that over 7 billion tonnes of food is wasted across the food supply chain in Australia. While reducing food waste is a complex challenge there are some great local organisations lending their support.
The team at Frankie’s Community Kitchen are working with our Fruit & Veg traders to help ensure leftover produce does not go to waste. By collecting a wide variety of fresh produce the organisation helps tackle food wastage and creates healthy, hearty meals for people in need! What a win-win!
