Known for supplying people from all over Melbourne a huge selection of books, Mustafa Aksoy of Volkan Books shares his story of over 15 years at Dandenong Market.
A popular hub in the market with an array of customers leafing through the latest and greatest Di Morrisey and James Patterson novels, children reading Harry Potter while Grandma flicks through the latest thrillers, Volkan Books is Mustafa’s pride and joy with a vast array of popular second-hand books.
Books have always been a passion of Mustafa, originally working in the drapery business with his family in Turkey, Mustafa worked for a friend in his second-hand bookshop and that is where the love of books began.
Mustafa’s greatest love is his wife Nuray: the couple have been together for 50 years and married for 42 years. Mustafa lights up when he talks about his wife, and his infectious warmth and passion for his family that he openly talks about is something we sadly don’t see much of today. Mustafa recommends spending quality time together, doing things that make you happy and being good to each other and your family. Mustafa and Nuray have three children who all proudly attend university, they all live close to the market and spend quality time together when they can.
Moving to Sydney from Turkey in 1986, Mustafa started working in a metal factory, but when an opportunity arose to move to Melbourne and open up a book stall at Dandenong Market his passion led his family to ours in Dandenong.
Volkan Books has thousands of fiction and non-fiction second-hand books on offer, and Mustafa encourages customers to buy, swap or sell books and keep the love of reading alive.
