Community Consultation on the Dandenong Market Precinct Masterplan

Greater Dandenong City Council and Dandenong Market have launched a draft Dandenong Market Precinct Plan, seeking feedback from shoppers and the local business community. The plan is a long‑term vision that will guide the transformation of one of the city’s most significant cultural and economic destinations.

The draft plan sets out a strategic blueprint to revitalise the wider Dandenong Market precinct, ensuring it remains a vibrant, connected and welcoming place for generations to come. It outlines long‑term actions to address land use, urban design, economic investment opportunities, transportation, public spaces and community infrastructure.

The consultation process is both in person and online until 10 April 2026. It will be accompanied by targeted engagements with traders, shoppers and other stakeholders, who will be able to speak directly with officers at a series of meetings, pop‑ups and drop-in sessions. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Masterplan?
A Masterplan is a dynamic, long-term planning document that aligns with a company’s strategic vision, goals, and objectives. A well-consulted and thoughtfully designed Masterplan will facilitate future vision and growth, maximize potential, and provide a clear strategy for implementation.

What is the Dandenong Market Masterplan?
The Dandenong Market Masterplan is a review of the current infrastructure of the Dandenong Market. This includes a full-site survey to establish opportunities that will improve the existing layout, traffic flow & visitor experience. The Dandenong Market Masterplan is being considered alongside Council’s broader Precinct Plan, which focuses on the wider Central Dandenong area.

What is the Dandenong Market Precinct Plan?
It’s a long term plan that sets the strategic direction for the future of the Dandenong Market Precinct, including the Market itself, and the public spaces, transport and access, built form, economic opportunities, housing and community infrastructure in the wider area.

Why is Council developing this Precinct Plan?
The precinct plays a major economic, cultural and social role in Greater Dandenong. The Precinct Plan will ensure the area grows in a coordinated, safe and sustainable way, while celebrating the Market’s rich history and character.

What is the timing for the new Dandenong Market Masterplan?
Planning conversations have already started between City of Greater Dandenong and the Market Management team/Board.

The Dandenong Market masterplan is a long-term vision project.  We are about to engage with traders and the community on an exhibition of the preliminary Dandenong Market Precinct plan which includes the vision for the Market specific masterplan.

The exhibition process will run throughout March and April 2026 with feedback being taken into consideration and collated into a final Dandenong Market Precinct plan which is due to be delivered in July 2026.

Once finalised, the Dandenong Market Precinct masterplan project will be developed in stages over the long term with the intention to keep the Market open to manage disruption. Any future stages would be carefully planned to minimise disruption and support traders to continue operating.

Why does the Market need to change? Why the need for a Masterplan?
Over the last 159 years, we have regularly upgraded the Market and will continue to do so to ensure that our amenities and product ranges accommodate the needs of our loyal, existing customers and equally attract new customers from across Victoria. The Dandenong Market Masterplan will establish improvements that will support a quality visitor & trader experience for years to come.

We need to invest in infrastructure to enable the Market to evolve and prosper into the future. Retail is continuing to change so the Market needs a footprint that aligns with this new direction.

Is the Market being replaced?
The Market has been a community-loved destination for over 159 years and will remain as a Market. There will be improvements to ensure its longevity well into the future, but ultimately the Market will stay as a market and hold onto the heritage and unique qualities that our customers love.

How does the Dandenong Market Masterplan connect with the Dandenong Market Precinct Masterplan & Community Hub?
Greater Dandenong City Council’s Dandenong Market Precinct Plan is a Council-led project focused on the wider Market precinct that the Market sits in and includes Council-owned land, buildings and carparks. The long-term Precinct Plan will ensure Central Dandenong remains a thriving commercial, cultural and community precinct in the years to come. The Dandenong Community Hub and the Dandenong Market Masterplan will be key considerations as part of this planning.
